This painting is a seated woman playing a kithara, a room for social gatherings. In this fresco, the kithara player is depicted as a young woman clothed in a purple robe and white cloth . She is adorned with a bracelet, earrings, and headband, all made of gold. Behind the seated woman stands a small girl wearing a sleeveless purple robe. She, too, is adorned with a gold headband, bracelet, and hoop earrings. Like portrait figures, the woman and the girl gaze directly at the spectator. Here it is evident how they were pictured, they were entertainers to please their family members. The woman playing the instrument is pictured as as plump young woman, this body shape would symbolize wealth, and status, because it would show that the men had money to keep their women fed and plump.
